Central services of the library The maintenance and development of our central services required quite a lot of work. The Copyright Deposit Service handled nearly 900 000 items and distributed them among the respective libraries. In the Interlibrary Loan Service the use of a telex-machine was introduced. This Service maintained relations with the libraries of 41 countries, this amounted to 59,4, resp. 57,9 per cent of the total turnover. During these two years the national union catalogue of books increased by 290 355 and that of the periodicals by 163 336 data. The 1969 union list of foreign periodicals was published and the monthly bulletins of the National Acquisition List of Foreign Books appeared regularly. The International Exchange Service acted as an exchange center beside providing its tasks in exchanging material. In the course of 1968-1969 39 496 books and periodicals were sent abroad and 41 227 items were received in exchange. The Book Distributing Division acted first of all as a center for exchanging the duplicate copies in Hungary, in the course of these two years this service distributed 141 193 library items among the libraries requesting them. The activity of the Centre of Library Science and Methods The organization and activity of the Centre of Library Science and Methods was supervised by the Ministry of Education in 1967 and the trend of its organizational development and its most important tasks were determined. In the course of the supervision the important function of the institute in library trends was stressed, without decreasing the research work in the field of library science and methodological activity. A new department was organized with the aim to carry out reading-experiments, the activity in the field of library science documentation developed. A quarterly review was launched that gives information on the international special literature taking into consideration the demands of Hungarian library developments. In the course of the activities the Centre of Library Science and Methods elaborated proposals to the modification of the library law, to the reform of the networks and to the further development of the trade union libraries. Studies presenting the development of library science, and its trend to be followed have been prepared to the conference of public education and to the III. Conference of the Hungarian Librarians. The Codex of Acquisition Field for the co-operation in this field was completed; this codex contains the division of the special fields and the most important data of the libraries interested. The institute investigated on a national level the situation of the libraries as regards experts and provision with scientific reviews, completed the investigation of the reading culture of the working class; in the field of scientific and special libraries the institute investigated the provision with special literature. Special courses of medium degree and continuation courses were organized for librarians. Its methodological activity embraced both the scientific and the public library network. Among others analyses were made to find out the measure of use of the special literature; it participated in the work of the interlibrary co-operation circles and compiled standard collections. The institute took an active part in the preparation of celebrating the 25th anniversary of our Liberation and of the Lenin centenary. It assisted the library theory and practice by several periodical and individual publications (Könyvtári Figyelő, Eseménynaptár, Új könyvek, Könyvtárgépesítési Füzetek, Könyvtárépítés és Berendezés Füzetei etc.). Management and direction of the library Dr. Magda Jóború, Director returned from her service of foreign affairs and took over the direction of the library on 16th December 1968. Beginning with 1968 there have been changes in the organization of the library as a consequence of its new rules of organization and activity.
