AZ ORSZÁGOS SZÉCHÉNYI KÖNYVTÁR ÉVKÖNYVE 1968-1969. Budapest (1971)
I. Az OSZK 1968-1969-ben - Az Országos Széchényi Könyvtár 1968—1969. évi működése - Report on the activity of the National Széchényi Library in 1968—1969
Report on the activity oj the National Széchényi Library on 1968 — 1969 In the activity of the library in the years 1968-1969 there were three important events: 1. According to the original plans these years were to close the preparations of the move to the Castle of Budavár. In view of the fact that this cannot be realized only in the years to come the plans had to be modified. 2. As a result of several years' urging the restoration and microfilming of the Hungarian newspapers of extremely bad conditon have been begun. A considerable sum was provided by the superintending authority for the necessary machinery and staff in 1969. 3. Because of the postponement of finishing the new building and of the insufficiency of the storage place our library was compelled partly to shift a part of its material partly to acquire an additional building. This storage building will, however, be ready to use only at a later date. Acquisitions The data of acquisition are contained in tables No. 1 and 2, their detailing are shown in tables 3, 4 and 5. Our work of acquisition has been determined by several factors. The new mechanism introduced in the national economy entailed in 1968 several problems first of all in the acquisition of foreign books by purchase (this has been made difficult also by the continuous increase in the prices of books abroad) ; in the course of 1969 the credit limits were increased thus they facilitated the acquisition both of the Hungarica material and that of the special books. In the case of the periodical publications we have striven to fill in the gaps. Our efforts in this field have been greatly assisted by the agreements for the exchange of microfilms with foreign libraries, as well as by the publication of reprints in an ever increasing number. It is noteworthy that late 1968 the acquisition of books and periodicals was united in the Acquisition Division and in the course of the organization of the co-operation among the great libraries in the field of acquition it was our library that brought about the committees of co-operation in the history of Hungarian literature and historical science. Catalogues, handling of books The reconstruction of the basic catalogues has been going on. The completion up to the present days of the alphabetical part of the catalogue of articles to be found in the Periodicals' Division and begun in 1958 was finished; the post 1945 part of the union catalogue was united and the post 1945 Slavic catalogue separated from it was also completed. Unfortunately we had no possibility in these years either to the reconstruction of the catalogues of the periodical publications and special collections. In the course of 1968 the Book Processing Division was divided into Cataloguing Division and Classifying Division. In 1969 dr. Gyula Haraszthy and Mrs. L. Faragó edited the analyzing description of the complete network of catalogues in the National Széchényi Library and the processing of the old Hungarian ex libris was begun in the Division of Old Prints. The numerical data of the processing work are contained in the table No. 6. 4 49
