series Magyar Könyvészet 1945—1960 were published. (Vol. 4. has already appeared, Vol. 3. is under press and the index is being compiled.) Simultaneously preparations have begun to the bibliographical compilation of the Hungarian book production in 1921—1944. The first volume of Régi Magyar Könyvtár (Old Hungarian Library) covering the years 1473—1600 will be soonly ready for press. As for the special bibliographies, those of the graphical posters and engravings for 1961—62 are important to be mentioned here. Our library contributes to the bibliographical work of several foreign associations, such as the Association Internationale des Bibliothéques Musicales and Repertoire International des Sources Musicales. Central and inter-library services In 1965—66 the Copyright Deposit Division received 1,8 million items (books, periodicals, small prints, music records), the 18.6% of these was taken into the library's collection, the rest was distributed among other Hungarian libraries. The International Exchange Service maintains regular exchange relations with 410 institutions of 58 countries; it forwarded 40 000 items (books, periodical numbers) to foreign countries, in exchange for which approx. the same quantity arrived from abroad. The material received this way was distributed among 120 Hungarian institutions. The Union Catalogue of foreign books and periodicals has been registering the foreign accessions of the Hungarian libraries. They have issued the important monthly „Accession list of Foreign Publication in Hungary" (in the field of the social and natural sciences) and published the list of „Current Foreign Periodicals in the Hungarian Libraries 1966" indicating 65,000 locations of approx. 16,000 periodicals. The Inter-library Loan Service received yearly more than 20,000 requests, 10% of which arrived from abroad. In 1965 93.9% and in 1966 85,1% of them could be satisfactorily fulfilled. 36% of the requests was met with reproductions of the original items, such as xerox copies, microfilms. The Book Distributing Division receives, processes and distributes the duplicate copies of the Hungarian libraries as well as the books gone over to the possession of the state. Though temporarily the work of the Division has slowed and the tasks could be done only at a reduced pace, the Division distributed in the last two years nearly half a million items among different libraries, presented for international exchange purposes and for home and foreign purchase. During the same period 174,000 duplicate copies were taken over from Hungarian libraries. The activity of the Centre of Library Science and Methodology in 1965—66 The Centre of Library Science and Methodology plays an integral part in the National Library's activity. Its work was determined also in the last two years by the general aims of the Hungarian libraries, the institution vividly participated in working out the plans and principles concerning library science for the 5 years to come. As a preparation the collaborators of the institution worked out the methods of scientific long term planning, determined the most important factors of planning, the urgent tasks and problems of development in the field of librarianship. The institution co-ordinates and appraises the research work and gives opportunity to the researchers for consultations. The functions of the public libraries have been discussed and laid down with the help of the leaders of the networks. Conditions of modernization, the principles of library building, operation of the so called club libraries forming unified educational centres in smaller villages have been put down. The collections for reading on the spot which fulfill demands of higher level, the additions of sample indexes to the periodical collection and the formation of separate reading rooms for periodicals are now in the limelight. In the field of the children's library a considerable progress can be observed, the development of the special library service to the grown up youth has also been commenced. In the interest of the smooth supply with special literature, work has been focussed on the establishment of the field of collection in the scientific and special libraries.
