Abstract - JÓZSEF SADLER (Posonium 1791 - Pest 1849) was an excellent naturalist of his age. His botanical interest was aroused most probably by LUMNITZER'S Flora posoniensis. He became familiar with KITAIBEL'S scientific activity during his studies at the Pest University, and afterwards he consciously endeavoured to follow that. After finishing his studies he became the curator of the natural history department of the Hungarian National Museum. In 1834 he obtained the botanical department at the medical faculty of the Pest University. His herbarium consists of more than 32,000 sheets, the quality of preparation is careful, and the informations of the labels are consequent. The greater part of the material is originated from his own collection from the Carpathian Basin. He endeavoured to make rare plant species of Hungary known by inquirers of botany via various exsiccates. Specimens from the Botanical Garden of the university present a valuable documentation. The number of SADLER'S contacts with his contemporaries exceeds one hundred. The collection was purchased for the museum by PALATINE JOSEPH in 1839, and later GYULA KOVÁTS wrote accurate registration marks on it. With 31 figures.
