Bálint, Zs. ; Johnson, K.: Taxonomic synopsis of the high Andean and Austral lycaenid genus Paralycaeides Nabokov, 1945 (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatini)

Biology- SHAPIRO (pers. comm. to the senior author) observed females oviposit in some cases on or near Astragalus in Jujuy region. Argentina. From his observations he also presumes that the larvae are myrmecophylous. SHAPIRO (1991) records the following pierids (listed below in alphabetical sequence) sympatric with P. vapa in Argentine puna according the Material Examined: Colias blameyi (Abra Inferniello). Tatocliila distincta (Abra Inferniello), T. inversa (Abra Inferniello, Ami Pampa), T. mercedis macrodice (Abra Inferniello, Azul Pampa) and Tericolias riojana (Abra Inferniello). Remarks - Nomenclature. Itylos oreopola was recorded in a new combination by the senior author placing the taxon in its correct genus (BÁLINT 1993a: 24). He had already questioned the specific status of the taxon. Studying topotypical specimens listed in Material Examined, the senior author previously synonymized the taxon with P. vapa (BÁLINT 1995: 5). - Faunistics. Two Transandean polyommatine (s.l.) lycaenids occur in NE Chile which are also recorded from Argentina, Bolivia and the southern Peruvian side of the Andes as well as from the Cuzco region: Nabokovia faga (cf. BÁLINT & JOHNSON 1994a) and Itylos titicaca (BÁLINT & JOHNSON 1994b). Available material is too scanty to determine the exact distribution of P. vapa but if we take into account that the Cuzco region, where P. vapa has not been collected, is relatively well investigated section of the high Andes, we might presume that the northern border of its distribution may be the vicinity of the Titicaca Lake, where the lookalike congener P. hazelea is most probably also occurring. P. hazelea, with its VHW pattern and slender and relatively long aedeagus, suggests a sister relationship with P. vapa but it is still not clear whether the Austral P. vapa or the high Andean P. hazelea is the primitive member of this clade of Paralycaeides. Type material examined- Lccotypc of Cupido vapa, male, designated by BÁLINT (1993a: 23) labelled as: "HuallaL, Gar!.; vapa; Zool. Mus. Berlin; 206; Origin; Lectotypus, Cupido vapa, des: Zs. Bálint, 1992.XII.2., Budapest; det. Zs. Bálint, 324 gen. prep. No.", deposited in MNHU. The Holotype specimen of "Itylos oreopola" (TL: Casa de Piedra del Rio de la Puerta, Dep. Tafi, Tucumán) is deposited in 1ML and was checked recently by G. LAMAS (pers. comm. to senior author).
