Makhan, D.: Thirty-five new Hydrochus species from the Old and the New World (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae)
This species is similar to H. harryi sp. n. and H. deepaki sp. n., but there is a difference in the shape of male genitalia: median lobe in H. samuelsoni narrowed to apex, in H. harryi and H. deepaki widened to apex. Hydrochus hiekei sp. n. (Fig. 4) Holotype: male. Tanzania, Elisabethville, Feb. 1940, H. J. BREDO (MUS. Tervuren). - Paratype: 1 male (same data as holotype) (Mus. Budapest). Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 2.4 mm, width 0.8 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head, pronotum, scutellum and elytra black and with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with sparsely fine punctures. Pronotum longer than wide, lateral side smooth. Disc with five large deep depressions. Anterior margin of pronotum with three depressions, one at the centre, two behind this. Posterior margin with two depressions. Elytral length 1.5 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side smooth, striai punctures coarse, wider than interstriae, 3rd, 5th and 8th interstriae carinate. Apical side with two holes. Elytral apices rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 4): Basal piece short, parameres longer than median lobe. Etymology: This species is named after F. HIEKE, curator of the Coleoptera Collection of the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin (Germany). This species is very similar to Hydrochus bisoenpersadi sp. n. and H. andrei sp. n.. Interstriae in H. hiekei carinate, in H. bisoenpersadi and H. andrei flat. Hydrochus bisoenpersadi sp. n. (Fig. 5) Holotype: male. Zaire, Elisabethville, Feb. 1940, H.J. BREDO (MUS. Tervuren). - Paratype: 1 male (same data as holotype) (Mus. Budapest). Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 2.9 mm, width 1.1 mm. Dorsal side shining.
