Makhan, D.: Nine new Hydrochus species from South and Central America (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae)

Hydrochus merkli sp. n. (Fig. 4) Holotype: male. Argentina, Misiones, Iguazu, XI. 1986, R. FOERSTER (female unknown). Description (holotype male): Body length 3.0 mm, width 2.0 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head and pronotum, scutellum and elytra greyish coppery with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum longer than wide, almost trapeziform, lateral side straight, smooth. Elytral length 1.1 mm, lateral side smooth, striai punctures slightly wider than interstriae, tubercle on 5th interstria absent, 9th interstria convex, apical holes absent. Elytral apices rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 4): Basal piece about as long as páraméra, páraméra narrow, with weakly sagittate apices, median lobe a little shorter than the páraméra. Etymology: This species is named after OTTÓ MERKL, curator of the Coleoptera Collection of the I lungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. This species seems to be allied to H jethoeae sp. n. but there is difference in the shape of male genitalia. Hydrochus otvosi sp. n. (Fig. 5) Holotype: male. Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo, 10.VIII.1965, J. S. ÓTVÓS (female unknown). Description (holotype male): Body length 3.6 mm, width 1.4 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head and pronotum, scutellum and elytra greyish coppery with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum almost trapeziform, lateral side with granules, anterior margin with 3, posterior margin with 4 depressions. Elytral length 2.3 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side smooth, striai punctures coarse, interstriae narrow, tubercle on 5th interstria weak. 9th interstria flat, apical holes absent, elytral apices narrowly rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 5): Parameres longer than basal piece, parameres narrow with weakly sagittate apices, median lobe shorter than the páraméra. Etymology: The species is named after J. S. ÓTVÖS who collected the holotype. This species seems to be allied to H battjai MAKHAN, 1992 from Suriname. The pronotum of battjai is longer than wide and the shape of male genitalia is different. Hydrochus naraini sp. n. (Fig. 6) Holotype: male. Cuba, coll. GEITNER, date unknown (female unknown). Description (holotype male): Body elongate, length 3.2 mm, width 1.2 mm. Dorsal side shining. Colour of head black, colour of pronotum, scutellum and elytra brown with a blue-green metallic gloss. Head with dense, fine punctation. Pronotum almost trapeziform, lateral side straight, smooth, anterior margin with 3, posterior margin with 4 depressions. Elytral length 2.3 mm, elytra widest on posterior third, lateral side smooth, striai punctures coarse, wider than interstriae; 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th interstriae carinate in almost whole length, tubercle absent, apical side with 2 large holes, elytral apices narrowly rounded. Male genitalia (Fig. 6): Basal piece short, median lobe longer than páraméra, apex of left páraméra wide. Etymology: This species is named after my nephew RAMON PREMCHANSINGH NARAJN. The holotype was labeled as Hydrochus pallipes CHEVROLAT, 1863 (see CHEVROLAT & FAUVEL 1863). However, there is difference in the shape of male genitalia. In H. pallipes the páraméra are narrow apically.
