MERKL, Budapest MERKL, O.: The second species of Oxinthas (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Coniontini). - Annls hist-nat Mus. natn. hung. 1992, 84: 89-92. Abstract - Oxinthas nicaraguensis sp. n. is described from Matagalpa, Nicaragua. With 10 figures. Oxinthas CHAMPION, 1884 is a member of the tentyriine tribe Coniontini (DOYEN 1972,1984) with one described species, O. praocioides CHAMPION, 1884 from Mexico. Dr. CHARLES W. O'BRIEN (Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee) sent me a brilliant array of Tenebrionidae in exchange for World Bagoini (Curculionidae) from the Hungarian Natural History Museum. This material was collected by C. O'BRIEN and his colleagues during Central-American trips. A few specimens from Nicaragua was found in the material. These specimens were identified first as I am involved in the preparation of a catalogue (MAES & MERKL 1992) and an identification key to the genera of Nicaraguán Tenebrionidae. Four specimens exhibit the characters of Oxinthas given by DOYEN (1972), namely the externally invisible submentum and gradually enlarged fore tibiae but clearly differ from praocioides. Oxinthas nicaraguensis sp. n. (Figs 1,3-6) Male- Body oval, moderately convex, widest in posterior 1/4 of elytra (Fig. 1), glabrous except minute, pale hairs in pronotal and elytral punctures and fine pubescence of legs; colour black, tibiae and head appendages brownish; elytra with quite indistinct, narrow, slightly paler brownish longitudinal bands; surface microreticulate, dull. -Head (Fig. 3) with coarse punctures about three times larger than eye facets,.separated by 1/2 to 3 puncture diameters (sparsest on frons); epistoma emarginate anteriorly, sinuate at-epistomal suture; dorsal crania! surface uneven, i. e. epistomal suture broadly impressed, frons strongly convex; eyes slightly emarginate, ventral and dorsal lobes approximately equal in size; antennae short, not reaching pronotal base; mentum flat, coarsely punctate, subtrapezoid, about twice broader than long with anterior margin thickened and weakly concave; projection of postgenae near to maxillary fossae (Fig. 4) less prominent, blunt, rounded; terminal segment of maxillary palpi elongate triangular. - Pronotum transverse (length to width = 54:35), broadest at the middle; lateral borders narrowly margined, arcuate in anterior half, very weakly sinuate in front of the posterolateral angles; anterior border broadly emarginate, finely margined in lateral 1/4, unmargined medially; posterior border weakly bisinuate, unmargined; anterolateral corners acuteangled; posterolateral corners rectangular; pronotal disk at the middle with punctures about 1.5-2 times larger than eye facets, irregularly scattered; punctation becoming denser and coarser toward lateral sides; hypomera set with scattered coarse punctures and narrow longitudinal grooves; prosternum coarsely punctate, prosternai process in ventral aspect flat, horizontal, ovoid (Fig. 4). - Scutellum small, triangular. Elytra slightly inflated posteriorly, lateral portions inclined, forming pseudepipleura; pseudepipleural margin rounded; elytral base slightly wider than pronotum; no humeral callus; elytral disk slightly uneven,
