Argaman, Q.: Generic synopsis of Sclerogibbidae (Hymenoptera)
DR. BYTINSKI-SALZ. RICHARDS (1955: 357) identified them embiidarum, KROMBEIN (1979: 472) as new species. Thus the original purpose of this work was to give a scientific name for this entity, but after examining 27 females and 264 males, I concluded that all belong to the same species. It is easily recognizable after the very long and narrow thorax of female, with pyriform scutellum; in the male with short pronotum, elongate propodeum with emerging spiracles. I think that transitoria, which possess all these features, belongs to this species. The lectotype of vagabundus is now headless but its strong constriction on the mesonotal-scutellar suture leaves no doubt as regards its identity. 6. Genus Cryptobethylus MARSHALL Cryptobethylus MARSHALL: in KIEFFER, 1905: 259. No species. Type-species: Cryptobethylus mancinii MASI, 1933; first included species. Crypthobethylus HAMANN, 1958: 18, erroneous subsequent spelling. Diagnosis of the genus as resulting from the key. Female unknown. Only one included species: Cryptobethylus mancinii MASI, 1933: 198, rf. Holotype rf from Isola di Capraia, Italy (in Mus. Genova). Host: unknown. Distribution : Isola di Capraia, Italy. — Additional material examined : 1 çf from "Sardinia occ. Sinis: Punta is Arutas, 0 m, littoral netting, 22 July, 1975, L. Gozmány legit" (in Mus. Budapest); 1 çf from "Israel, Herzliyya, 26. XI. 1981, Malaise trap, A. Freidberg legit" (in coll. Tel Aviv Univ.); 1 çf from "Israel, Ofaqim, Oct. 1983, Q. A." (in author's coll). — Additional new record: 4 çfçf from "France, Dept. Var, St. Tropez, Rematuelle, 1. IX. 1986 and Garde Freinet, 10. IX. 1986, M. J. Gijswijt legit" (in Mus. Leiden and based on the examination of Dr. van Achterberg). Remarks — Both DR. VAN ACHTERBERG and I contest the synonymy of this species with Sclerogibba crassifemorata. Although the differences between mancinii and males of other genera in this tribe are small, the particular shape of the fore-femur, when weighted, indicates that genus may be retained as valid until the female will be discovered. 7. Genus Probethylus ASHMEAD Probethylus ASHMEAD, 1902: 270. Type-species: Probethylus schwarzi ASHMEAD, 1902, by monotypy and by original designation. Diagnosis of the genus as resulting from the key. Three species are currently recognized : 1. Probethylus schwarzi ASHMEAD, 1902: 270, çf. Holotype çf from Arizona (in USNM, Washington). Host: unknown. — Distribution : Arizona. 2. Probethylus callani RICHARDS, 1939: 211, Qrf. Holotype from Trinidad (in Brit. Mus. (Nat. Hist.), London). Host: Pararhagadochirtrinitalis SAUSSURE(CALLAN 1952). — Distribution : Trinidad, Mexico. 3. Probethylus mexicanus RICHARDS, 1939: 216, çf. Holotype çf from Mexico (in USNM, Washington). Host: unknown. — Distribution: Mexico. — Additional material examined: 1 çf from "Argentina, Entre Rios" no collector data (in author's coll.); it is partly demaged, left wing broken; base of the scutellum with a short, shining, weakly prominent longitudinal carina (Fig. 18), otherwise agreeing with the original description.
