Merkl, O.: A review of the Australian species of the subtribe Lagriina (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae)

Ecnolagria aurofasciata (BORCHMANN, 1915) (Figs 37, 49-50, 63-64, 88, 118-119) Lagria aurofasciata BORCHMANN, 1915, p. 85, 86. — Ecnolagria aurofasciata: BORCHMANN, 1933, p. 3; BORCHMANN, 1936, p. 142; ARMSTRONG, 1948, p. 293. Body elongate oval (çf) or much broader ( 9 )• Head and pronotum blackish to reddish brown, often with bluish sheen. Scutellum reddish. Elytra dark blue at basal 1 /5 to 1/4; violaceous to purplish from middle to apex; between blue and violaceous parts with a poorly bordered transversal strip golden, sometimes with greenish tinge. However in some cases the elytra largely yellowish brown with cupreous lustre. Ventral surface reddish. Antennae black, basal segments sometimes brownish at base. Legs black with femoral base reddish. Dorsal surface with pubescence rather short; erect on head and pronotum, semierect on elytra, mixed with scattered erect hairs. — Length 7-11 mm. çf. H e a d coarsely and densely punctate. Fronts distinctly impressed between eyes. Interocular distance narrow, as wide as half of eye diameter (IOI = 50). — Antennae rather thick (Fig. 37), segment I considerably longer than interantennal distance (IAI = 131.6). Relative lengths of antenna! segments VI to XI are 13: 13: 12: 11: 10: 39, i.e. last segment somewhat longer than 3 preceding segments combined. Segment IX conspicuously, X a little less lobiform at inner side. — Pronotom slightly transverse (PNI = 95.2), widest at middle, weakly convex, with 4 indistinct depressions. Punctation coarser and less dense than that of pronotum. Interspaces irregularly raised, slightly plicate, smooth. — Elytra slightly widening toward posterior third. Apex truncate, epipleura slightly turning out preapically at inner side. Punctation finer than that of pronotum. Interspaces barely raised, hardly plicate, smooth to slightly alutaceous. — Metasternum with median protrusion prominent, rounded, blunt. Abdominal sternite I with a strongly prominent median keel, sternite II with a smaller outgrowth in the posterior half. Last abdominal sternite nearly straight at apex. — Legs moderately robust, femora normally clavate. Fore tibiae with a few small denticles at distal half. Middle tibiae abruptly widening from middle, the widened part finely but distinctly serrate (Fig. 49). Hind tibiae with a conspicuous, very long but not broad tooth just anterior to middle and a row of much smaller, fine denticles between the large tooth and apex (Fig. 50). — Aedeagus as figured (Figs 63-64). — Habitus: Fig. 118. 9. Somewhat larger and broader. Interocular distance equal to eye diameter (IOI = 100). Antennái segment I much shorter than interantennal distance (IAI = 69.6). Relative lengths of antennái segments VII to XI are 15 : 14: 14: 12: 32, i.e. last segment much shorter than 3 preceding combined. Apical segments simple. Pronotum more transverse (PNI = 77.6). Surface of metasternum and abdominal sterna even. Last abdominal segment acutely rounded at apex. Femora less clavate, tibiae unarmed. Habitus: Fig. 119. Type material — Only one specimen of the 3 Borchmann's syntypes was traced. It is designated as lectotype and labelled as follows : Blackall Range | Coll. Hacker | Syntypus [red] | Borchmann det. j Lagria aurofasciata n. sp. [white with black margins, Borchmann's handwriting] | Lectotypus 9 Lagria aurofasciata Borchmann, 1915 des. O. Merkl 1987 [red] Ecnolagria aurofasciata (Borchmann, 1915) det. Merkl, 1987. It is deposited in IFPE. Distribution : South-eastern Queensland (the northernmost locality is Ayr) and northeastern New South Wales (Fig. 88). The localities of specimens identified with certainty suggest a southern rainforest distribution pattern. Non-type material examined. Total 25 specimens. — Queensland : Ayr, 30. V. 1960, M. XL 1977, Signe Holm (1, ZMKD); Tooloom Plateau, via Woodenbong, 30-31. XII. 1966, G. Monteith (1, UQIC). Remarks — The large tooth of hind tibiae and the colour pattern make the males readily recognizable. The male aedeagus strikingly resembles that of Ecnolagria schneiderae and somewhat of Ecnolagria rufescens; however, the females do not differ in any feature from those of Ecnolagria tomentosa (further remarks see under Ecnolagria tomentosa).
