Merkl, O.: A review of the Australian species of the subtribe Lagriina (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae)
Ecnolagria tomentosa (FABRICIUS, 1775) (Figs 38, 51-52, 65-66, 91, 122-123) Lagria tomentosa FABRICIUS, 1775, p. 125. — Lagria tomentosa: FABRICIUS, 1801, p. 70; BOISDUVAL, 1835, p. 287; BORCHMANN, 1910, p. 13; BLAIR, 1920, p. 155. — Ecnolagria tomentosa: BORCHMANN, 1915, p. 142; BORCHMANN, 1936, p. 142; ARMSTRONG, 1948, p. 293. Lagria pulchrivaria LEA, 1917, p. 175 (synonymized by BLAIR, 1920, p. 155). Body elongate, narrowly (çf) or broadly (Q) oval. Head and pronotum reddish to blackish brown. Scutellum reddish, Elytra light yellowish brown, with blue basal colouration to variable extent; the rest of elytra with coppery sheen. Sometimes elytra largely bluish. Ventral surface reddish. Dorsal pubescence rather short ; erect on head and pronotum; semierect, mixed with erect hairs (çf) or decumbent ( $ ) on elytra. — Length 8-12 mm. rf. Head coarsely and densely punctate. Frons weakly impressed between eyes, interocular distance much narrower than eye diameter (IOI = 66.7). — Antennae rather thick (Fig. 38), segment I somewhat longer than interantennal distance (IAI = 115). Relative lengths of segments VI to XI are 15 : 14: 12 : 10: 7 : 37, i.e. last segment longer than 3 preceding combined. Segment VIII strongly asymmetrical, apex bicuspidate at inner side. Segment IX with weak lobiform extension at inner side, segment X feebly dilated. — Pronotum nearly as long as wide (PNI = 97), widest at middle, aimost evenly convex, with traces of 4 shallow impressions. Punctation coarser but sparser than that of head. Interspaces irregularly raised, plicate, smooth. — Elytra slightly dilated posteriorly. Apex simply rounded. Punctation finer than that of pronotum. Interspaces slightly plicate, somewhat alutaceous. — Surface of metasternum and abdominal sterna even. Lasti abdominal segment broadly rounded at apex. — Lengs moderately robust, femora slightly clavate. Fore tibiae unarmed. Middle tibiae gradually and slightly widening toward apex. Middle and hind tibiae with a row of minute denticles quite hidden among hairs (Figs 51-52). — Aedeagus as figured (Figs 6366). — Habitus: Fig. 122. 9. Somewhat larger and much broader. Interocular distance broader than eye diameter (IOI. = = 119). Antennái segment I much shorter than interantennal distance (IAI = 52). Relative lengths of segments VII to XI are 14: 13 : 12: 10: 28, i.e. last segment much shorter than 3 preceding com-, bined. Apical segments simple. Pronotum distinctly transverse (PNI = 83.5). Legs slenderer, tibiae unarmed. Last abdominal segment acutely rounded at apex. Habitus: Fig. 123. Type material — Owing to the BMNH's policy of not lending Fabricius' types from the Banks Collection, the type of Lagria tomentosa was not seen. However, through the kindness of Dr. R. J. W. Aldridge and Mr. L. Jessop, some coloured slides were made from the specimen in question. These confirmed me in that that Lagria tomentosa and Lagria pulchrivaria are conspecific. 84 Fig. 84.
