Merkl, O.: A review of the Australian species of the subtribe Lagriina (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae)
3 preceding combined. Pronotum more transverse (PNI = 88.9), with an impressed median area with troubled punctation. Tibiae unarmed. Type material — Of the 2 female syntypes, I have designated the less damaged specimen with Macleay's handwriting as 1 e c t o t y p e . It is labelled as follows: Cairns N. Queensland | SYNTYPE [red] | On permanent loan from MACLEAY MUSEUM University of Sydney ] Lagria ruficeps Macl. Cairns [handwritten] | Lectotypus 1985 Lagria ruficeps Macleay, 1887 designated by O. Merkl [white with red margins]. It is deposited in ANIC. — Paralectotype : Queensland : labelled as lectotype (1 $, ANIC). Distribution: It is known from several localities of the rainforests of northern Queensland (Fig. 82). Certain lagriine specimens from New Guinea with somewhat similar colour pattern have often been identified as Lagria ruficeps but these represent not closely related undescribed species. Non-type material examined. Total 127 specimens. — Queensland: Atherton, 13. II. 1975, H. & A. Howden (1, CNCI); 4 mis S Atherton. 11. II. 1975, H. & A. Howden (1, CNCI); id., 14. IL 1975, H. & A. Remarks — The distinctive dorsal colour pattern and the small size make this species a readily recognized member of the Australian Lagriina. Lagria azureipennis MACLEAY, 1886* (Figs 12, 20, 81, 100) Lagria azureipennis MACLEAY, 1886, p. 157. — Lagria azureipennis: BORCHMANN, 1910, p. 7; BORCHMANN, 1915, p. 88; BORCHMANN, 1936, p. 47. Body elongate, rather slender. Head and pronotum metallic blackish green, shining. Scutellum blackish. Elytra, including epipleura, unicolorous vivid blue. Ventral surface dark reddish brown. Antennái segments I to VIII yellow, segment IX a little darker, segments X and XI black. Legs black with femoral base faintly reddish. Dorsal surface covered with long, semierect to erect, sparse, white pubescence. — Length 8.0-12.0 mm. r/.Head coarsely and quite densely punctate. Interocular distance nearly twice as wide as eye diameter (IOI = 180). — Antennae slender (Fig. 12), segment I much shorter than half of interantennal distance (IAI = 27.3). Relative lengths of segments VI to XI are 12: 11: 12 : 11: 10: 38, i.e. last segment longer than 3 preceding combined. — Pronotum nearly as long as wide (PNI = = 98.6), sides arcuate, widest just anterior to middle, narrower anteriorly than posteriorly, coarsely but not very densely punctate. — Elytra with punctation almost as coarse and dense as that of pronotum. Interspaces irregularly, moderately plicate. — Legs typical, tibiae unarmed, hind tibiae nearly straight. — Aedeagus as figured (Fig. 20). — Habitus : Fig. 100. * See Addendum on p. 161.
