Merkl, O.: A review of the Australian species of the subtribe Lagriina (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae)

Q . Size larger on average. Interocular distance more than twice as wide as eye diameter (IOI = = 217.6). Antennái segment I very short (IAI = 23.6). Relative lengths of segments VII to XI are 14: 13: 14: 12: 29, i.e. last segment much shorter than 3 preceding combined. Pronotum a little more transverse (PNI = 97.6). Type material — MACLEAY (1886) described the species from the Fly River, New Guinea, but none of his type material has been located. The species has not been included in the list of type specimens of the Macleay Museum (BRITTON & STANBURY 1981). Macleay's description is quite laconic but leaves little doubt as to what species he had. If the original type material has surely been lost, the neotype will be designated from New Guineán material in the future. Distribution — Frequent in Papua New Guinea, it reaches Australia at the northernmost tip of Cape York Peninsula and in the Torres Strait islands (Fig. 81). Non-type material examined. Total 26 specimens. — Queensland: Banks Isl., Torres Str., 2. VI. 1969, A. Neboiss (1, HNHM; 2, NM VA); id., 22. IL 1979, W. McLennan (1, AMSA); Eet Hill Vicinity, Moa (Banks) Island, Torres Str., 9-13. VII. 1977, G. B. Monteith & D. Cook (3, HNHM; 12, QMBA) ; Lockerbie, Cape York, 6-10. VI. 1969, G. B. Monteith ( 1, HNHM ; 2, UQIC) ; Lockerbie Area, Cape York, 13-27. IV. 1973, G. B. Monteith (2, QMBA); Somerset, L. M. D'Albertis (2, MCSN). Remarks — It resembles Lagria cyanea but differs from that in being larger and somewhat slenderer, in having the antennae much narrower and largely yellow. The blue elytra distinguish it from the black Lagria queenslandica. Lagria queenslandica BORCHMANN, 1915 (Figs 13, 21, 81, 101) Lagria queenslandica BORCHMANN, 1915, p. 84, 87. — Lagria queenslandica: BORCHMANN, 1936, p. 36, 40. Body elongate, rather slender. Dorsal surface shining black, sometimes with slight bronzy tinge. Ventral surface reddish brown. Antenna! segments I to VIII yellow, segment IX a little darker, segments X and XI black. Legs black with femoral base sometimes reddish. Dorsal surface covered with moderately long, semierect to erect, sparse, white pubescence. — Length 9.5-11.5 mm. (/.Head coarsely and densely punctate. Interocular distance more than 1.5 times as wide as eye diameter (IOI = 160). — Antennae slender (Fig. 13), segment I much shorter than half of interantennal distance (IAI = 27.0). Relative lengths of segments VI to XI are 12: 10: 11 : 11: 10 : 33, i.e. last segment a little longer than 3 preceding combined. —-Pronotum slightly transverse (PNI — 93.8), widest just anterior to middle, coarsely and moderately densely punctate. — Elytra with punctation almost as coarse but less dense than that of pronotum. Interspaces moderately plicate. — Legs typical, tibiae unarmed, hind tibiae nearly straight. — Aedeagus as figured (Fig. 21). — Habitus : Fig. 101. 9. Size larger and broader on average. Interocular distance twice as wide as eye diameter (IOI = 200). Antennái segment I very short (IAI = 22.1). Relative lengths of segments VII to XI are 12 : 12 : 12 : 10: 27, i.e. last segment considerably shorter than 3 preceding combined. Pronotum more transverse (PNI = 90.1). Type material — BORCHMANN (1915) mentioned 4 type specimens; of them, 3 females have been found. The lectotype is herewith designated and labelled as follows : Kuranda Hacker ) Coll. Hacker j Borchmann det. | Syntypus [red] j Lagria queenslandica n. sp. [white with black margins, Borchmann's handwriting] | Lectotypus 9 Lagria queenslandica Borchmann, 1915 des. O. Merkl 1987 [red]. It is deposited in IFPE. — Paralectoty pes Queensland: labelled as lectotype (1 9, IFPE); no closer locality, 1909, Gehr. W. Müller Vermächt (I 9, SMTD). Distribution: It is confined to rainforests of the Cape York Peninsula (Fig. 81). The southernmost locality known to me is Bowen. Non-type material examined.
