Description of male Ae. potanini appears more slender than Ae. festivus, however, the most striking difference is the dark-light striped pattern of abdomen. This pattern may be very contrasting black and white in fresh, well preserved and young specimens, but may gradually weaken and disappear when the setae are worn out and are lost. In Ae. festivus the abdomen is always grey, without any distinct stripes. The falling out of white setae in the abdomen of Ae. potanini is particularly important in the anterior half of the median white streak whose anterior part overgrown small (1/2 of lenght of abdomen) harder scutum. As a result the median white streak is often shorter and begins with a characteristic fork on scutum, marked on published drawings of this species. In some specimens the abdomen is entirely bald. Both species have two streaks of white setae along the thorax, on the edge of dorsal and lateral surfaces, these are usually better preserved and more conspicuous in Ae. festivus. Anterior tarsus-metatarsus is intensely black or borwnish black in Ae. festivus — a character visible both in Eastern Palaearctic (Okhock Sea shores) and Central European specimens. Ae. poFigs 6-11. Comparison of Aelurillus festivus (C. L. KOCH) (7, 9) and Ae. potanini (SCHENKEL) (6, 8, 10, 11).
