Szujkó-Lacza, J., Kováts, D. ; Rajczy, M.: Revision and numerical evaluation of the Hungarian Spergularia species (Caryophyllaceae)

In an other variant, FRIS (1817) proposed the name of Lepigonum for a section name of Arenaria, which WAHLBERG (1820) raised to generic rank. Again PERSOON (1805, p. 504) used the Spergularia as a section name in the genus Arenaria as follows: "Spergularia. Habit Spergulae. Flor. Arenariae. Caul, ad genicula stipulaceus (humifusus)." Furthermore, on p. 505: "Hae species aut Spergulis, ab iis enim stylorum numero tantum diffère videntur, associanade, aut sub peculiari genere, eii Alsine segetalis L. addi posset, ab Arenariis separandae, cum quibus seriem haud naturalem efficiunt. "Consequently, PERSOON (I.e.) was the first who clearly differentiated Spergula from Spergularia by the presence of stipules in Spergularia. WIMMER (1832) also followed PERSOON, but J. et C. PRESL (1819, p. 94) raised the Spergularia section name to a genus. "Spergularia. Torenka. Cal. 5. 5-phyllus. Petala 5, intégra. Caps. 1-locularis, 3-valvis polyspermae calice tecta. Sem. compressa marginata. Caul, stipulaceus." Notes : The Greek "spar", the Latin "Spargo" word = spread is a common architectural character of plants in both genera. This character is mentioned again by BAUHINI (I.e.) in p. 241 "Alsine Spergula dicta. . ." form. The stipules also were not discovered as a new character. MORISON (I.e.) mentioned them first p. 551 "Alsine Spergula facie seu Spergula minor ..." ... cauliculis est semipedalibus in terram reflexis geniculatis: geniculis singulis bina foliola, interdum plura, brevia, sub exortum alba membrana, "tenuitecta, caetera angusta." — ... More recently LEBEL (I.e.) one of the best specialist of the genus Spergularia, wrote p. 25 Le trait qui caractérise le mieux ces plantes, an premier aspect, c'est une nodale infrafoliare, formée de 4 stipules scariceuses, termes on brillantes." The other names of this genus usually were accepted only once. Characters of genus Spergularia Annual and perennial herbs, with top-root, usually micorrhized. Slightly woody at the base (in second years), with erect procumbent, usually much branched stems. Mostly glandular. The stem is divided by nodes and internodes, dilated at the nodes or flattened. Leaves linear, flesh in some species, with pale, scarcely stipules united to surround the node, stipules adhering or free, at the base conspiculous, scarious, widening, broadly triangular or acuminate, apex setaceous on entire, silvery. Leaf fascicles (undeveloped lateral branches) and lateral branches borne on only one side of the node, but the subsequent branches grow on opposite side of the stem. Flowers in cymose inflorescences. Peduncules much shortenedfrom the base of inflorescence axes to the apex. Flower actinomorph, hermaphrodite, 5-merous, sepals free, green with serious margins, petals entire, pink, alternate with sepals, stamens 1-10, styles 3. Capsule dehiscing with 3 valves. Ovary superior, numerous campilotropous ovules on a free-central placenta; seeds brown, subtrigonous triangulate or flattenedrounded, winged or not, surface or tuberculate. Spergularia media (L.) C.
