Szujkó-Lacza, J. ; Sen, S.: Correlation coefficient study in some character pairs of the Hungarian Gentiana (Gentianaceae)

Character No. 23 = length of pedicels. Character No. 24 = length of calyx tube. Character No. 29 = length of corolla .tube Character No. 36 = length of filament. Character No. 38 = length of gynoecium. The results are tabulated hereunder: The r values between the character pairs in four Gentiana species Character No. G. ciliata G. pneurnonanthe 67. cruciata 67. asclepidea 4 & 5 0.3114 0.1885 -0.6088** -0.1049 5 & 23 -0.1280 -0.3362 • • 23 & 24 -0.6593**** 0.0227 • • 23 & 29 0.2402 -0.1362 • • 23 & 36 -0.1541 -0.1075 • • 23 & 38 0.1788 -0.5741** • • 24 & 29 0.2485 0.1107 -0.0211 -0.4189 24 & 36 -0.0286 0.5208* 0.3370 -0.2466 24 & 38 0.0986 0.0330 -0.2957 -0.3655 29 & 36 0.2526 0.2785 0.0940 0.4131 29 & 38 0.0570 0.4238 0.1865 0.1948 36 & 38 0.2208 -0.0057 -0.0146 -0.2768 Symbols: P>5% = *; P>2% = **; P>1% - ***; P>0.1% = ****; • = Pedicel absent. Discussion The tabulated form of results gives the r values of different selected character pairs in the four species. A general survey indicates that many of the characters are non-correlated. Only occasionally some significant positive or negative correlation is observed. In case of 67. cruciata characters No. 4 and 5 show a negative correlation significant at 2% level. It appears to be due to the branching habit of the plant, as the branches arise in cluster from the very base. In the other three species branches are not clustered. Characters No. 23 and 24 show a negative correlation at 0.5% level in 67. ciliata. It seems to be dues to large showy flowers arranged in terminal cymes. Another negative correlation significant at 2% level is noticed between characters No. 23 and 38 in 67. pneurnonanthe. In this species the gynoecium is large compared to its pedicel. This is probably related with growth regulating activities in two opposite directions. In 67. ciliata there is no significant correlation between this particular character pair. The only positive correlation significant at 5% level is seen between characters No. 24 and 36 in 67. pneurnonanthe. In this species the flower is large, long, narrow and tubular. The calysteeths are free at long distance and the petals are fused almost throughout their length except at the terminal end. The filamants are also long and epipetalous. The calyx and filament length significantly correlated in positive direction. Regarding this correlation we believe that the calyx and filaments are not regulated in opposite direction by the growth regulator because between them are the petals and therefore probably this character pair is genetically controlled in the same direction. Finally our results or selected quantitative characters indicate that 67. pneurnonanthe has two such character pairs (23 and 38, 24 and 36) which have significant correlation with each other by growth regulating factors. 67. ciliata and 67. cruciata has only one character pair each (23 and 24 ; 4 and 5, respectively) regu-
