lated in oposite direction. In 67. asclepiadea there is no pair with significant correlation. The pedicel is a taxonomically important character in Gentiana as it appears to be genetically controlled and under strong regulation of growth regulators so much so that in 67. cruciata and 67. asclepiadea the pedicels are not only long or short but are wholly absent. In two species where it is present it shows significant correlation with other characters. Its absence in the other two species is also an equally important negative character. Although CLIFFORD (I.e.) stresses that the attributes which give significant correlation may be used for clas ification of taxa, in our study we did not find any attribute to be relied upon statistically for separating the four species.
