tudinally, on the remaining part transversely finely and closely striate, outside the area finely punctured along the lateral carinae, posterior inclination transversely finely and closely striate, sides of the segment on dorsal and posterior parts very finely and closely obliquely striate, anteriorly smooth and polished, abdomen practically impunctate. rf unknown. Holotype: 9> Kaesong, Mts. Pakyon, 20 km NE from Kaesong, 11. IX. 1971 (No. 260). 19. Trypoxylon varipes nasutum ssp. n. 0 (Figs. 3 — 4, 7) The Korean subspecies of T. varipes PÉREZ ( $ ) differs from the typical form occurring in Japan in that the supraantennal elevation is more acutely, thickly and highly raised, when seen in front as in Fig. 3 ; in cross section it will appear as given in Fig. 4. In the typical specimens the upper ridge is much narrower, with the lateral inclination aslant, seen in front as in Fig. 5 and in the cross section it will appear as given in Fig. 6. This form of the supraantennal tubercle is very constant in 27 female specimens of the typical race examined. In this species the clypeus is slightly produced on the anterior margin in the middle, but the form, size and degrees of the protuberance are considerably varied among the specimens. In the present specimen from Korea it is as given in Fig. 7. The colour of the legs is also fairly broadly variable and in this specimen it is inclined towards the melanic form. rf unknown. IX. 1971 (No. 257); 1 $, do., 10-12. IX. 1971 (No. 257). Distribution : The Ussuri region, new to the fauna of Korea. Remarks. — The specimens examined from North Korea well agree in characters with T. pygmaeum Guss., as far as the description goes, and are considered, with the support of the geographic relationships, identical with this species. But the differences of this species from T. clavicerum pointed out by the original author are all variable in character and cannot be the specific or even the subspecific distinctions. According to the examination of the Korean specimens, however, it differs from clavicerum s. str. in that the supraantennal tubercle is much highly elevated. In this character it is quite similar to the Japanese population, T. clavicerum exiguum TSUN., but can be distinguished therefrom by the character of the clypeus. In T. c. exiguum the surface of the clypeus is medialy gently and roundly elevated as in clavicerum s. str., while in the Korean specimens the surface is much less rounded, at least at the anterior portion, it is rather longitudinally bluntly raised as in T. koikense of Japan. It is presumable that the same is true with the Ussuri population and one of the characters of the subspecies.
