the scutum, scutellum and propodeum wholly (8 çf) or only propodeum wholly (2 Ç 6 çf) with a strong blue shine. Notes on some other variations. — 1. The scutellum carries a large white mark in the female, sometimes it is separated into two spots; in the male sometimes it is for they are) present, but sometimes completely lacking. The collar of pronotum is in the female always white, but in the male very frequently the mark is broadly interrupted into two small spots. 2. The oculocellar areas are sometimes (18 9 m typica and 1 Ç in nigra) markedly roundly impressed and appear very characteristic, but in others (18 9 in typica and 8 Q in nigra) the areas are not impressed or much more indistinctly impressed (25 9 i n typica and 4 9 i n nigra). 3. Frontal furrow is sometimes very weak and not remarkble (9 çf), but sometimes fairly deep and distinct. 4. Punctuation on vertex very fine and sparse and larger and closer anteriorly on upper frons ; in the size and density of the punctures, however, there is a considerable difference among the specimens ( 9 çf)- 5. Sculpture on the area dorsalis is generally similar in pattern, but in the strength and density there are marked differences among the specimens. It is strange, however, that there is no such a marked deviation as observed among the Japanese representatives. 10.
