DOM. specimen, but also still present on the vetust vaginae and specially on the desiccated innovational blades. I am well conversant with this decaying process after my experiences gained in my experimental garden during twenty years. The dead vaginae turn snow white and in a more advanced state almost turn to dust, so that only the sclerenchymatous fascicles remain. Not even DOMIN could have assumed any evolutional value for his Subtribus, as evident when emphasizing the value of his new species in the Observatio to Koeleria alpigena DOM. : "Eine sehr characteristische Pflanze, die schon habituell eine ganz eigenartige Tracht besitzt". However, he considered it not improbable that it might be a secondary taxon, a "Bastard", which, having originated from K. gracilis and K. vallsiana, now reproduces by seeds. On the basis of some features, and also a general impression, he also thought of Koeleria splendens, as its parallel species living in the Alps. But in view of the fact that at Brançon both Koeleria vallesiana and Koeleria gracilis occurs, and that he thought to have recognized init the transitional form of most of the characteristics, he believed to have found a hybrid combination and not a third, distinct species. However, he did not regard it as a primary hybrid, because it seemed to be widespread at Brançon and because its features appeared to constant, besides having also its own distinct characteristics. The form related to Koeleria alpigena DOM., considered also as a hybrid combination probably of Koeleria gracilis and Koeleria vallesiana, may be thought of — according to DOMLN — on the basis of its morphological characters, also as a race of Koeleria alpigena DOM., and thus described it beside 27. Koeleria alpigena DOMIN as 27* K. Mannagettae DOMIN (DOMIN 1907). According to the basic ideas expounded by DOMIN in the introduction of his monograph, the taxa differing in smaller characteristics are to be regarded as varieties whose totality constitutes his species. Arabic numerals were assigned to these great species in his work. He assigned a number to Koeleria alpigena DOMIN, and did not place it beside either Koeleria vallesiana BBRTOL. ampl., or "Koeleria gracilis PERS." In spite of this, and probably owing to the Observatio mentioned above, only Koeleria alpigena DOMIN is recorded under Nr. 254 in HEGI'S Illustrierte Flora von Mitteleuropa, and Koeleria Mannagettae DOMIN, though not occurring within the area treated, is not mentioned even in eight-point type text. Nor does the latest Swiss Flora (HESS, LANDOLT & HIRZEL 1967) mention Koeleria alpigena DOMIN, remerking only that it was found in a single locality only, together with Koeleria vallesiana, and that it is questionable wheter we have to deal with a distinct species or a hybrid of the species indicated. 54.
