Jánossy, D.: Middle Pliocene microvertebrate fauna from the Osztramos Loc. 1. (Northern Hungary)
The large Prospalax kretzoii n.sp., may be particularly revailing for the geologic age in view of the fact that a smaller form was described from older and younger faunas. A comparison with the faunistical picture of other European microvertebrate assemblages is rather difficult because the large mammals are nearly entirely lacking and the available microfaunas of the whole Pliocene are also very poor. The presence of the two Cricetids [Rotundomys (Kowalskia) polonica and magna] as well as Baranomys kowalskii and Polonomys connectes the Osztramos 1 fauna with the little known assemblage of Podlesice. More connections are however present with Upper Pliocene forms described from Wçze, Csarnóta, etc. The absence of Mimomys and (or) Cseria-like forms separates our microvertebrate fauna stratigraphically even from Ivanovce (Ruscinium of KRETZOI, 1962 ; FEJFAR, 1961). The lack of Galerix, Spermophilinus, Periodyromys etc. separates the Osztramos 1 fauna clearly from the small Lower Pliocene faunas described lately from Austria : Eichkogel and Kohfidisch (G. DAXNER-HÖCK & G. RABEDER, 1970; BACHMAYER & W. WILSON, 1970) and last but not least from Polgárdi in Hungary (see KORMOS, 1926 etc.) All things considered, we may presume that the microfauna of Osztramos 1 represents a distinct stratigraphical unit possibly termed also as „Postpannonian Pliocene". Since this faunistical wave seems to fill in a larger faunistical gap in our knowledge of the Middle Pliocene, I propose for it the new stratigraphical term Estramontium nom. nov. (after the latinized form of the old name of Osztramos = Esztramos). A stratigraphical table may make the place of our fauna clearer in time in the Hungarian succession of Pliocene Faunas : Stratigraphical table of succession ol small mammals in Hungary during the Later Pliocene Stratigraphical „ . . . , name Characteristic micromammals Localities Csarnótánum (KRETZOI, 1959) "Lowest Yillafrancium" Petenyia, Beremendia, Cricetinus, Dolomys nehringi, Cseria Baranomys (Dominant) Csarnóta 2, (Wçze, Wölfersheim, Gundersheim) (Seynes) Ruscinium (KRETZOI, 1962) Allosorex, Baranomys, Triloplwmys, Cseria, "Mimomys stehlini" Boussillon (Perpignan), Ajnácskő, Ivanovce A, Sète Estramontium nom. nov.
