Nagy, I. Z.: Lower Cretaceous Cephalopods from the Mts. Bakony, Hungary
Greatest whorl cross section with 9 ribs. Ribs even, of equal interstices, densely arranged. Shell straight, rate of coiling minimal. The large double ribs and the intervening deep sulcus on the aperture are very characteristic and well visible. Occurrence: England (substauderi and dispar zones); Switzerland (Vraconnian; Lower and Upper sections); France (from the Pervinquieria pricei zone). Hamites (Stomohamites) sp. indet. A 25 mm. long fragment, found at Weim-puszta, Nagyesztergál (M. 63.1610). In its habit and rib sculpture indicating the above subgenus, but no details can be established owing to the bad state of preservation. Fam. : Baculitidae MEEK, 1876. Genus: Lechites NOWAK, 1908. Lechites gaudini (PICTET et CAMP.) (Plate I, Figs. 5, 6) 1861. Baculites Gaudini PICTET et CAMPICHE, p. 112, pl. 55, figs. 5—7. 1940. Lechites Gaudini PICTET et CAMP.—BREISTROFFER, p. 154. 1968. Lechites gaudini (PICTET et CAMP.)— RENZ, p. 80, pi. 17, fig. la, b; 2a, c; 3a, b; 4a; text fig. 29e. Examined material: Tés, M; Bakonynána, G; Jásd, Z; Olaszfalu, V; 11 specimens. Biggest fragment 73 mm., greate whorl altitude 15 mm. Description: Cross section rounded oval, ratios 7:6, 15:14, 12:11. Ribs wide, squat, inclinate on ventral side. Subtended inclination varying between 40—45° in the Bakony specimens. Ribs obsolescent on dorsal side. Greatest whorl diameter with 3 ribs, but also 4 in several exemplars. Suture rather indented. Lobe L unequivocally symmetric, whereas lobe U tending to vary, that is, asymmetry not definite. Remarks : Most of the specimens consist of the living chamber or its fragment, being chiefly stone molds or shells. The suturai conditions are examinable on three fragments only, hence the variation mentioned above is to be interpreted intraspecifically. Occurrence: England (Upper Greensand, from the ? variocosum to the dispar zones); France (entire Vraconnian); Rumania, Sardinia, Algeria, Madagascar, Zululand, India, Japan, Mexico. Lechites communis SPATII (Table I, Figs. 7, 8) 1941. Lechites communis SPATH, p. 666, text figs. 244a—e. Examined material: Bakonynána, B; Tés, M; Olaszfalu, V; 11 specimens, fragments. Biggest exemplar 68 mm. long, greatest A value 19 mm. Description: Shell rounded oval in cross section, ratios: 15:13, 19:18, 12:13, 19:18, 15:14. Ribs medium robust, relatively densely spaced; greatest whorl cross section with 5—7 ribs. Ribs evenly developed both on ventral and dorsal sides, but obsolescent on dorsal margin. 2 TT.
