In the course of comparing the morphological features of the Southern European and Hungarian races it was found that the specimens deriving from the environs of Buda differ by several constant characteristics from the nominate form. The individuals from the Buda area are characterized by the following traits: Size. The first brood is essentially bigger than the second, with a difference in size between the sexes being also significant. The difference between the alar expanses of the males of the first and second generations considerably exceeds the one observable between the females of the two broods. Brood I, males: females : Brood II, males : females : 22.6+1.5 mm 26.0 + 0.5 mm 19.7 + 1.7 mm 25.0 + 0.5 mm Colour and pattern. The colour of the upperside of the wings of the male specimens is rather vivid, owing to the alternation in the pattern of the lively ochreous yellow and grey hues. The ochreous yellow is considerably more saturated than in the nominate form, especially in the median field, the postmediane, and the outer margin. The grey colour is not or hardly bluish tinged, whereas the bluish grey hue is marked in the nominate form. The median field is not delimited basally by a Une, while there is a sharply defined, ochreous yellowish antemedian line in the nominate form. The postmedian line is much wider and stronger, its colouration more conspicuous than in the nominate form. In general, the upper surface of the wings of the specimens belonging to the Hungarian race is much livelier and more distinct. The light basic colour of the underside of the wings is more yellowish, the appearence of the ochreous yellow tinge stronger, and the dark pattern more extensive and deeper than in the nominate form.
