Bohus, G. ; Babos, M.: Notes on the occurrence in Hungary of Russula species, with regard to their range in Europe
ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARICI Tormis 52. PARS BOTANICA 1960. Notes on the Occurrence in Hungary of Russula Species, with Regard to their Range in Europe By G. BOHUS & M. BABOS, Budapest The systematic exploration of the Russula flora of Hungary started about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the collection gathered was wholly annihilated during World War II. The present paper is based on the meritorious data of Hungarian mycological literature and on the herbarium material collected since the war and deposited in the Botanical Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Bv this draft, the authors wish to make more complete our knowledge on the European ranges of the Russula species, which generally lack data referring to areas under a continental effect, with special regard to the territory of the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe. It ought to be worthy to know how far the continental influence touches on the range of the several Russula species, the modification of their frequency values and on their coenological connections. For this very cause, we paid special attention to the coenological conditions of our home species, in the course of our investigations in the last years. The present paper omits the discussion of species which, though expounded in a former paper of the senior author (Bohus, 1943), originate from the Carpathians (R. azurea, clarqflava, paludosa, viscida) and thus have not yet been found within the borders of Hungary. Russula adusta Fr. Its distribution in Europe is rather extensive, but it tends to be always rarer towards the south, not shown from numerous countries (probably absent). This is true also for Hungary, even though some literature data indicate its home occurrence. Those referring to the environs of Budapest cannot be substantiated ; they may be regarded as relating to R. densifolia. The data published from the western confines of the cotmtry (Kőszeg, Sopron), that is, the eastern foreground of I he Alps, may be valid. (The species occurs in areas of a similar character, in Piceetum, north of Hungary). Lit. : around Kőszeg, V i s n y a (1928—29) : around Sopron, Fehér&Bessenye i (1933). Russula aeruginea Lindbl. ap. Fr. Frequent and fructifying in masses in the birch forests, and under birch trees in Pinus woods, of Europe. In Hungary, it is an infrequent fungus, due to the relatively few and restricted birch woods. The literature datum referring to the Mts. Buda cannot be substantiated.
