Horváth, L.: The results of the zoological collecting trip to Egypt in 1957, of the Natural History Museum, Budapest 7. The ornithological results

Pratincole (Glareola pratincola pratincola L.) I observed a specimen near Abu Rawash on 24 September. Its early occurrence on a site most suitable for nesting allows the conclusion that it belonged to the population breeding in Egypt and not to northern migrants. Herring Gull (Larus argentatus ssp.) I observed it only at Alexandria and on the Mariut lagune. I noted 2—2 specimens on 2 September, and 8 on 24 and 29 November in the inner port of Alexandria. I sighted 15 specimens on the Mariut lagune on 23 November. Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus fuscus L.) I noted a total of 42 birds in the port of Alexandria. Of these, I saw 32 specimens on 2, 3 September, and 10 on 26, 27 November. Slender-billed Gull (Larus genëi Brème) The noted and shot female specimen on the Lake Karun on 13 October is of an extraordinary interest from two points of view. First, it was observed in Egypt only on the coastline of the Red Sea, but even there it occurs very rarely. Its exceptional interest lies mainly in the fact that this gull species of very strongly maritime habits was observed now for the first time on an inland water far from the seashore. The Lake Karun is about 300 km away from both the Mediterranean and the Red Seas, seperated from them by deserts. Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus ridibundus L.) On our return journey, I counted a total of 144 specimens in the port of Alexandria on 28, 29 November. Sooty Gull (Larus hemprichii Bruch) The specimen observed on the coast of the Red Sea at Marsa el 'Alam on 31 October falls within the northern limits of the range of the species. Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia Pall.) I observed it only along the coast of the Red Sea. On the shoreline between Marsa el 'Alam and Hurghada, I noted 5 scattered and solitary specimens. The birds have probably belonged to the local breeding population. 30 Természettudományi Múzeum Évkönyve
