Issekutz, L.: Parnassius apollo (L.) in the Carpathians
differs so much from other Carpathian apollos, that nitriensis must be qualified indubitably as a new subspecies. I give the nitriensis name to this nova subspecies to connect it with the locality where this apollo can be found. The type specimens serving as base to my description are in the collection of D r. L. Kovács (Budapest), who kindly presented one pair to the Museum of Natural History in Budapest and another to me. 4. subsp. rosnaviensis subsp. nova. Returning to the southernmost occurence of the liptauensis : the sources of the Hron (Garam), we find again apollo in the region of the Mountains of SzepesGömör (Murány, Gömörszeg and Göinörvég). Apollo , flying there, also loses some of its yellow colouring. The size of the Murány specimens, however, still confirm with the liptauensis, so that it can be looked upon as a transitus leading to the form occuring around Roznava (Rozsnyó), a form which has to be separated distinctly from other races. The Rozsnyó race belongs to the big form of the Carpathian apollo. Male 40—44 mm., female 44—46 mm. Densely scaled, of a distinct white colour. Apex of forewing rounded, just like carpathicus, resulting in a broad shape of wing. Hyaline margin of male begins broad (5—-6 mm.) narrowing already at R 4, sinuating between M 2 and M 3 towards base, reaching usüally Cu r Subcostal band Ъegins at costa with a marked black patch, narrow, but with very distinct edges, usually not reaching Cu 1. Subcostal blotches medium. Cell spots big, external one invading M 2-M 3. Middle cell spot broader than the outer one. Dorsal blotch rests on A X l, medium and circular. Costa and base scarcely sooty, light yellowish. Eyespots on hindwing medium, usually circular, lively mahaleb-red. Middle eyespot usually big, the costal, however, with very little white dot, frequently absent. Black frame of eyespots medium, external margin strongly dentate. Both anal spots present, long and medium sized. Dorsal sootiness not reaching anal spots, invading cell from base only a little. Submarginal band in traces, usually totally absent. Hyaline margin of forewing of female begins even more broadly (8—10 mm.), narrowing down from R 4 on, usually not reaching dorsum. Subcostal band not too broad, with very distinct edges, scarcely blurred, not invading hyaline margin, not even beyond Cu r Therefore white lunula spots between hyaline margin and subcostal band narrow but boldly expressed. Subcostal blotches big, frequently converging. Cell- and dorsal spots big, latter reaching even Cu 2. Costa, base, dorsum and area between Cu 2-M 3 beside cell weakly sooty, light yellowish. Sootiness of area on base inside cell towards middle cellspot more dense, looking like lighter black spot. Eyespots on hindwing big, gaudy mahaleb-red. Middle eyespot big, costal with blurred white dot. Black frame of eyespots intensely marked, especially central one. External edge of frame also strongly dentate. Anal spots big and broad. Sootiness on dorsum reaching lower anal spot circling cell angularly. Hyaline margin narrow. Submarginal band very distinct, beginning at costa and disconnected by veins, reaches dorsum with exquisitely and distinctly outlined lunula spots. Part of veins between cell and margin irrorated with black dots. This variation differs f rom liptauensis in size and colour, from Candidus in shape and S'ze, from carpathicus in colour, and being so characteristic regarding the exquisitely marked pattern of the submarginal band that it must be taken as a separate race. 1 nominate it after the confirming locality subsp. rosnaviensis (subs. nova). Type specimens serving as base for description were caught by me around Roznava (Rozsnyó), in July, 1943. 5. subs. Candidus (V t y.). The northern spurs of the Mountains of Szepes-Gömor extend up to the upper course of the Hornad (Hernád). There, around Spisska Nova Ves (Igló), Iglófiired, Iglóvaspatak and in the most southern valley of the Vysoké Tatry (Magas Tátra), south of Poprad, in the Virágvölgy apollo also breeds. The size of the specimens originating from this area correspond with liptauensis, yet they are of a more light 146
