11 INTERIOR VIEW OF THE EXHIBITION with Mónika Kumin and Péter Molnos, worked on the interpretation of the Hungarian paint­ers' reaction to Van Gogh's œuvre. The places for staging the exhibition material (which in total consisted of some 150 paint­ings, drawings and prints) were the Pergamon Hall and Ionic Hall in the historicizing building of the Museum of Fine Arts. These richly decorated halls with painted w r alls and high ceilings were designed by Albert Schickedanz (1896-1906) and were planned originally to display the exhibition through the major phases of the history of architecture and to host the collection of plaster casts to illustrate the history of European sculpture. Staging the Van Gogh exhibition in this space was a real challenge for the two interior designers, Eva Magyari and Béla Pazar. Eventually they decided to present the space and the artworks together. They designed small "boxes" that made it possible to display the related artworks as separate units but which at the same time created a sense of intimacy. These open little rooms were lined up one after the other, thus lending an internal rhythm to the created space, as if filling it up and emphasising its width, depth and height. The rooms resembled open winged altars and were a manifesta­tion of minimalist architecture. Their material resembled wood and their simplicity expressed respect for the individual artworks: the minimalist colour scheme and forms, the wooden floor
