panels and the wood-like installations were designed to form a link with Van Gogh's pictures conforming to the ascetic, Protestant work ethic manifest in the paintings. Thus the richness of the architectural space remained untouched and the two forms of expression —that of the building and that of the paintings —harmoniously complemented one another. Judit Geskó THE FIRST HEYDAY OF THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BUDAPEST: GÁBOR TÉREY (1864-1927) MEMORIAL EXHIBITION 1 December, 2006 - 11 February, 2007 Curator: Orsolya Radványi The centenary of the opening of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, was celebrated on 1 December, 2006. To mark this occasion a monograph (its review see below) was made summing up the scholarly and curatorial activities of Professor Gábor Térey, a key figure of the first quarter of the century-long history of the institution, along with a chamber-exhibition intended to evoke the atmosphere of xhtfin de siècle. It was expected that the first exhibition in the museum, which according to the Millenary Law of 1896 was established using the material of the National Picture Gallery, would be carried out in accordance with the tastes of the international museological profession and of the Hungarian public. This task fell to Professor Gábor Térey, a young and ambitious academic who had graduated from more than one foreign university. Térey succeeded in organizing a permanent exhibition in the edifice of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, and the high standard of the exhibition was a match for any of the great European galleries. This first exhibition, augmented by a scholarly catalogue, raised the Budapest museum to the level of an internationally recognised and acknowledged institution. Until now posterity has not accorded Térey due credit for his versatile activities, moreover, instead of the high esteem he deserves, he has been misunderstood and deliberately misinterpreted for decades.
