SZILÁGYI, JÁNOS GYÖRGY: "La gigantesque horreur de l'ombre Herculéenne" Apulian Red-Figure Vases Decorated in Superposed Colours
16. Apulian stemmed plate decorated in added red. Once Swiss market. (F. Sternberg AG, Auktion Vorschau, August 1995, Zürich 1995, pl. 25, no. 446) anyway, since synchrony in itself does not prove relatedness) is not sustainable, and as such, not suitable for refuting the existence of a separate Red Swan Group. 21 It should be emphasised, however, that the separability of the two groups does not preclude the fact that their pieces could have been produced in the same or in a neighbouring workshop, at least for a while, which might have resulted in the borrowing of some of the ornamental motifs (as it happened in Athens). The stemmed plate displaying motifs on its inside characteristic of both groups (fig. 16) might serve as a good example for this. 22 Considering the obvious relationship between the earlier and later group, it may be assumed (while still expecting additional corroboration from further finds) that in the last third of the 5 th century, in a workshop, possibly in Metaponto according to the known documents, craftsmen started to decorate the tondos of local imitations from Attic cups of the 'delicate' class in added red, using various motifs, amongst which the water-fowl looking left appeared particularly often, though not exclusively. Later, following the tendency that started to dominate Italiote red-figure vase-painting, some painters - either in the workshop producing the earlier cups or elsewhere - developed a motif-pair based on the laurel-branch and water-fowl combination to decorate cups 21 Beazley himself did not touch upon the issue of dating; it was Robinson who discussed it (Robinson, op. cit. 1996 [n. 12], n. 14), refuting rightly Schauenburgs arguments concerning chronology. 22 F.
