Település - népi építészet - Foreword
the Folk Arts and Craft Council for decades; he was also member of the secretariat for the Millennium Memory Committee for several years. After that he was president of the Country Houses Society for almost a ten years. All of these assignments were rather time consuming and also needed a lot of mobility and flexibility. His responsibilities included judging folk art, chairing board meetings, opening exhibitions; he was thoroughly committed to Hungarian folk art, conservation of folk architecture and to the museum sector. We are convinced E. Füzes never considerd it a flaw in his career that he did not produce a great deal of books, monographies or studies, although his knowledge, scholarly attitude would have predestined him for all that. He was just doing his job, according to his fate and as the will of the Creator defined for him. Dear Reader, We, who know E. Füzes very well, know and acknowledge his merits, cherish the memories of talks to him, have read his succinct, clever writings many of which are still in manuscript. We thought the best acknowledgement and appreciation of his life would be assisting him to collect and publish his writings which are not easy to access or have never been publicized. Our aim is to show the achievements of fifty years of intensive professional work. This volume is a collection of studies and other writings arranged thematically. Folk architecture, skan/.enology, conservation of folk monuments, issues of country houses, object creating folk art and the prospects of folk arts and crafts in the 20-21" centuries are the crystallisation points along which the volume is presented. On the basis of the accomplishments of 55 years presented in the book, everyone will be able to judge the merits of E. Füzes. At the end of the book the original publication and bibliographic details of the studies are listed, as well as the source of pictures. The order of providing additional notes has changed profoundly over the decades, therefore, for practical reasons notes are not given in a unified way. Illustrations of earlier publications are not fully listed in the current volume. Finally, we wish the reader a pleasant reading and learning, and above all we wish to pay tribute to Dr. Endre Füzes and warmly congratulate him on the occasion of his 80"' birthday. The Editors 12
