Budapest Éva Svidrán The "Rose Hill of Ebes" and its image in the society The architectural image of Ebes shows four "concentric" circles. The village's new part is an "island" within the community, something "newer in the new" A study of this part of the settlement from architectural and social point of view is absolutely necessary if we want to have a comprehensive picture of Ebes. A new community appears in the new part of the village. A new layer of the consumer society is to be found here, produced by the land-image segment of the consumer culture. The most striking showoff object of this social layer is the new house, being at the same time a status signal within the community. This social layer has been migrating towards villages near to big towns. Satisfying such needs, suburb zones have been constructed in villages from the mid nineties. Proxemic studies carried out in the houses confirm that these communities are interpreted as a new layer of the consumer society. The use of the plot, the arrangement on the plot, the existence of different rooms and their functions reveal that the people living here belong socially and culturally to the same group. This is furthermore confirmed by the relationship between the original inhabitants and the newcomers: the former don't consider the latter as inhabitants of Ebes. 173
