György Jendrassik (Budapest, 13 May 1898 - London, 8 February 1954) mechanical engineer; he acquired world fame in the field of development of diesel engines and gas turbines. He studied in 1919-1920 at the Technical University of Berlin where he attended lectures of Einstein too. In 1922 he obtained his diploma in mechanical engineering with mark of distinction and in the same year he started to work at Ganz és Társa - Danubius Villamossá- gi- Gép- Waggon és Hajógyár Rt. He worked out several patents, which provided a basis for the development of diesel engines of small and medium performance suitable for vehicles. He made his career in GANZ: he became the factory's managing director from 1942 and in 1943 he was elected corresponding member of the Hungarian Scientific Academy. After the war political distrust surrounded him and he emigrated. He settled in London. In 1990 he was awarded posthumous with the Széchenyi-price. 19
