Ros HáSáná is the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the feast of the birth of the world. This is the first day of penance in Jewish religion; during the ten days of penance the religious Jews repent their sins they committed during the year lost in their thoughts and enter the New Year spiritually purified. At New Year's Eve sweet dishes are eaten to make the New Year sweet too. The ceremonial milk bread is not longish but round and is topped with poppy seeds that symbolise wealth and fertility. The milk bread and the traditional apples are dipped in honey rather than salt to have a sweet new year. Nuts, however, are not consumed in this period as the Hebrew words "nut" and "sin" have the same numeric values/* 7 U b Rékai 1997. U 1 Rékai 1997. RDS HÁSÁNÁ IIFWKH NFW VFARl
