Beliefs and superstitions Several beliefs and spells have been known related to the pig. They referred mainly to the animals health and fertility, on the other hand, the picp behaviour was interpreted to make predictions of the weather and of important events in life. To prevent bewitching, a red ribbon was tied to the pig-sty. To prevent the picß death, the head of a serpent caught before St. Georges day was put in its trough. To accustom the pig to the house, the new pig was led into the pig-sty backwards and his first food in the house was bread. If a pregnant woman scratches a pig, or if she is present when the pig is singed, her child will be hairy or dirty. The water of the first bathe of a newborn baby is given to the pigs to drink it. If a child does not sleep well, some of the straw in the pig-sty is put into his cradle. A young couple has to kick the door of the pig-sty on St. Andrews day: when the pig gives a grunt, there will be a wedding at carnival time. Pork has to be eaten on New Year's Day because the pig digs up the fortune. 11
