CHANCES IN THE VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN AND WAY OF LIFE IN THE 19-20™ CENTURY Introductory thoughts to the volume of essays and studies IBOLYA T. BERECZKI The Hungarian Open-Air Museum submitted successfully an application for support to the Ministry of Education for the project National Program for Research Development, announced the first time. The Ethnography institutes of the universities of Debrecen and Pécs joined in the three years of research program between 2001 and 2004. The research program of medium term had a great importance in the life of the Museum too, having as primary objective the realisation of two permanent exhibitions of the region South-Transdanubia and of the group of buildings of the market-town of Northern Hungary, the further ethnographic basic research, architectural surveys, collection of ethnographic objects, exploration of the concerning material in the counties museums and archives and carrying out ethnobotanic examinations needed for the planting plans. Several of the totally twenty partial tasks executed within the Research development program referred to ethnographic basic research and two of them expressed the intent to publish the results of the research as scientific paper. As a speciality of the research, we decided in 2001 to allow to students to learn the elements of scientific research and treatment by providing them the financial conditions of fieldwork. The results of this program are two PhD-dissertations, several diploma works and a number of published or soon to be published studies as well as papers read in conferences. The reader finds sometimes the first results of the scientific work of a student, in other essays he reads mature statements of scientific profoundness and elaboration by our authors. The primary objective of several articles is the first publication of material, since the original exploration on the site of the building is important for the Museum when working out its utilisation plans for the given region.
