MOLNÁR Erzsébet: Esztergom-Zsidód Árpád-kori település lakóházai
Dwelling houses of the settlement Esztergom-Zsidód from the Arpadian Age ERZSÉBET MOLNÁR The study presents the houses of the village Zsidód from the Arpadian age unearthed so far, near the Hungarian royal centre Esztergom. The author examines the inside arrangement of the houses and explains the interpretation of the "protrusions" belonging to the houses. It is observed that these protrusions are to be found on the wall opposite the hearth and they protrude in the outside direction and have different sizes. Their traces appear together with the traces of the houses and their filling is also similar. In the house no. 2001/2 in Zsidód we found not only a protrusion opposite the fire-place but also a well preserved funnel, which explains the function of the protrusions attached to the houses. Following our observation, the protrusions are the remains of the funnels belonging to the houses. We concluded from the fact that they are always at the same place, that they had a double function: they fed the fire and ventilated the house by educing smoke. Four out of the five houses unearthed in Zsidód had funnels. Houses with protrusions have been found in other excavations too, which are certainly also remains of funnels. This proves that there were houses with funnels among the houses in other villages as well. Taking into consideration the latest archaeological results, we have to reconsider the negative opinions about smoke eduction in the Arpadian age, which say that smoke left through the door and other openings. The latest results prove that smoke could leave also through the funnel.
