Sándor Aranyos FROM THE ETHNOGRAPHIC COLLECTION TO THE ECO-MUSEUM The middle-term development possibilities in the open air museum in Szenna in the 21st century The time for the necessary renewal comes one day in the life of every museum, generated by the permanent changing of the environment around the institution (society, economy, politics). Since an open air museum can never be considered as completed, the question arises which way the open air museum in Szenna should follow. The answer has to be looked for in the earlier study plans, in the museum’s environment and in the communities and has to be based on professional expectations. The only ethnographic open air museum in the region Southern Transdanubia has considerable possibilities. It is situated in the village of Szenna; the Lake Balaton and Kaposvár are not far; the collection area is well defined, moreover, well elaborated in its ethnographic and architectural aspects and significant forest and game economy is available. All these and the profile of the communities and villages around the museum call for the development concept designed for an eco-museum. This can be built on a scientifically supported thinking and farming system and on the instrument assets of the permaculture. The middle-term development strategy of the institution outlines mainly the development of the exhibitions and of the interpretation. The buildings selected from a more or less identical time period are not sufficiently attractive for the visitor of the 21 st century. The creation of living museum settings and the extension of the presentation in space and time are methods which can be implemented in the open air museum in Szenna. Only after this can take place the extension of the building stock, for example with a roman-catholic chapel, a school building based on type plan design, a farmstead of the 20th century from Szenna - and the completion of the unaccomplished torso units. And if we want to mention the last step, we have to talk about a new exhibition hall for local history and about the possibility of a multifunctional reception building - meeting the needs of the village and of the museum. But since it is about the modernization in the sense of an eco-museum, the realization is inconceivable without the research into the community, the adaptation of their knowledge as it is in the 21 st century and their involvement in the daily work. 275
