BATÁRI ZSUZSANNA-SZONDA ISTVÁN: „Új csizmám nyalka"

„MY NEW BOOTS..." The essay reviews the process of boot making through the description of the technology used in the Marsi-workshop, a boot making workshop in Gyomaendrőd. The apropos of this research was the furnishing of a boot making workshop in the Upland Market Town regional unit of the Hungarian Open Air Museum. In the first half of our study we touch the basic facts, which influenced the development and significance of the boot making trade. We also explain the relation between the boot and shoe making trades and mention the change of technology. Then we present how the altered circumstances (trade-co-operative-trade) affected the craft. We examine how the boot making trade, which had had a high esteem for centuries resurrected and detail the demands, which influenced its new appearance. In the second half of our essay we accurately document the reconstruction of a pair of boots, made in the 1920s. The boots, which are to be exhibited in a boot making workshop, were made from traditional material with traditional technology, in order that we can describe the process. We find the presentation of the necessary tools and equipment important, parallel to the description of the different stages of the process. We illustrate the essay both with drawings and with photos.
