Mrs. Gyula Katona THE COLLECTIONS OF THE HUNGARIAN OPEN AIR MUSEUM After scientific preparations had been made for the Szentendre Open Air Ethnographic Museum the Budapest Ethnographic Museum commenced at instructions from the Ministry of Culture to organize and establish the Open Air Ethnographic Museum and during April 1967 the Village Museum Department, too, was formed. When investments had been made and construction began on the site of the Open Air Museum in 1970 the organizers found themselves facing utterly new tasks. It became necessary to set up specialized working sections to accomplish the technical, architectural and restoration tasks added to museological ones complex enough as they had been. To meet these requirements a technical group was founded besides the Department for Museology within the Village Museum Department which, in connection with its work, produced several specific materials like technical documentations, surveys, photos of the buildings during taking them down, plans for furnishing the reerected houses, etc. At the same time the collection of objects and pieces of furniture for the houses was sped up. All this made necessary the formmation of collections, the handling and processing of which was assigned to the Registry Group formed as of the 1 st of January, 1971. On the 1 st January 1972 the Open Air Ethnographic Museum became a national institution with an independent scope of interests. From this day collections began to be moved and by the beginning of 1976 each of them was in Szentendre. The distribution and system of the collections of the Open Air Ethnographic Museum have been grouped around four main types of materials in correspondence with the concept of the Museum. COLLECTION OF DATA I Collection on folk architecture II Collection concerning museum history III Collection of documents concerning museum pieces IV Collection of historical data (copies) V Collection of maps (copies) COLLETION OF PHOTOS I Negatives II Transparencies COLLETION OF OBJECTS Collection of objects to be exhibited LIBRARY. In the scientific plan of the Museum important roles are assigned to the collection concerning folk architecture and to the photos on the same subject which will underlie the archives of folk architecture to be set up in the near future.
