KÖZLEMÉNYEK - Gosztonyi György: Környey István (1901-1988)
126 Comm, de Hist. Artis Med. 218—221 (2012) Kömyey’s personality was characterized by straightforwardness, frankness, demanding disposition and a strict sense of duty. The requirements from his co-workers were always the same as for himself. His working and concentration capacity and time economy were legendary. The unfavourable working conditions could never be an excuse for a deterioration in the quality of work. His standpoints, decisions were determined by a strict consistency of principle. In spite of his non-conformal attitude, he could, thanks to his great professional respect and to the support of his friends, preserve his position even in critical times. He belonged to the group of those professionals, who had taken all possible efforts to preserve and keep unified in the “post-classic” period of clinical neurological sciences these disciplines within the walls of a single institution, in the frame of one single university chair. Due to his enduring, high level activity we honour in his person one of the nes- tors, who fundamentally supported and incited the development of Hungarian neurology in the 20th century. The 30th anniversary of his professorship at the Medical University of Pécs was celebrated by his pupils with the edition of a Memorial Medal, a creation of Miklós Borsos. At the jubilee celebration all pupils of the master were presented with a cast of this medal. The memorial medal made by Miklós Borsos Four years after his death his pupils remembered their master by the installation of a bronze relief at the entrance of the clinic. Very soon, in 1992, his previous co-workers, lead by Professor György Pálffy, Környey’s immediate successor in the chair of neurology, founded the Society of Környey’s Pupils. At the yearly congregations of this Society the pupils honourably remembered their master. The announcement of competition essays has also been introduced. The author of the first winning essay was rewarded by a Környey Memorial Medal. In 2005 the Society of Környey’s Pupils was transformed into the Környey Society, and Professor János Kopa was elected as its first president. Also in 2005 a Memorial Session at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences took place, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the edition of Kömyey’s monograph on anoxic-vasal cerebral injuries.31 On 31 Kopa J.
