It is possible, in fact quite likely, that he was not indifferent to the fate of the Slav-speaking peasants of his ancestors' native Turóc county, then a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, now in Slovakia. But it is clearly mistaken to state categorically that "he was the spokesman of the rights and liberty of the Czech and Slovak people", "conscious of his Slovak origin", "a pioneer of the coming together of the Czechs and Slovaks", although this is what Ján Junas, the compiler of the Slovak memorial album does. It is a pity that he is doing so, because this is a tipically a historical approach, attributing actions and feelings to Jessenius which were not born yet and which he was unable to feel. The 12 photos of the album are interesting in themselves, and Junas's text is also good, concise and informative, making use of the newer findings about Jessenius. There are a few factual mistakes, too (e. g. Jessenius' wife was not born in Dresden, he did not — and obviously could not — dedicate his thesis on the rights against the tyrants to Rudolph II, etc.), but the main trouble is the nationalist tone of this short popular introduction. (This approach is not entirely absent from Ruttkay's v/ork either, but it is much less marked and not so much lacking in facts.) Junas ought to have stuck to the line that he himself recommends in one of his sentences: "The life of Jessenius must be approached from a wide angle, not from national point of view." In our opinion this late humanist scholar was not Czech, Hungarian, Slovak or anything else, but a Central European, who had several homelands and contributed to the culture of all. His medical and political work served first of all the interests of the Czechs and Germans of Bohemia, but he consciously identified himself with Hungary, too, which was then the country of both Hungarians and Slovaks, His memory ought to unite rather than divide the various Central European peoples. A könyvrészletek kronologikus rendben követik egymást, kiemelve az egyes korokra legjellemzőbb orvosi ágakat. így tehát nemcsak egy-egy időszak gyógytani színvonalát ismerjük meg, hanem képet kapunk az orvosi szemlélet változásáról is. Szépíróktól vett műrészletek bemutatják az orvos, a beteg és a társadalom koronként változó viszonyát is. A könyv segítséget ad azoknak, akik az orvostudomány történetét mélyebben meg akarják ismerni. Az egyes fejezetek előtti rövid bevezető tájékoztat a kor képéről, a tudomány színvonaláról és röviden bemutatja az idézetek szerzőit is.
