features so much. The sight was so cruel and grievous that I had to close my eyes. Then I could see the kind figure of the Professor in the autumn of 1970 at the final session of the XXIInd Congress. The September sun lit through the window of the Hall of the casino at Mamaia. The Professor as Chairman said his farewell words, and then addressed all participants in their mother­tongue. His face was glowing, his eyes radiating, he was rejuvenated by an inner fire. Here he was at the end of the congress, after so much worry and excitment. He could greet the international gathering of medical historians in his own country. He wrote the name of the young Rumanian medico-historian movement in the annals of the international society, he could crown his own life-work by handing the delegates the comprehensive work "The History of International Medical Science" edited by him and written together with his disciples. I think then, for that afternoon, he was happy. He believed that he could say with his Latin ancestors that he had a worthy life and grew old with dignity. On that November morning my dead master lived in my memory with that scene, when standing before the bleak bier I said in myself the words of gratitude and parting: "Ave atque vale!"
