Then, the clinical picture was aggravated by respiratory complications, a septic condition and symptoms suggesting the presence of erysipelas. However, one thing appeared to be certain: not a single symptom of the otherwise serious clinical picture pointed to the absence of one of the kidneys. The remaining sist:r-organ has replaced the function of the two kidneys which had existed before the operation. As of the thirty-sixth day, the condition of the patient was rapidly improving. Her "uncleanness", which—like that of a patient suffering from pestilence — condemned her to an almost complete seclusion —had ceased at one stroke after the operation. And what is more, she regained her vigour and joy of life. At the end of November, 1870 she left Prof. Simon's clinic, returned home and continued her normal activities as a completely healthy individual. The hundred years which have elapsed since then are usually referred to as the "triumphant march of surgery" or as the "triumphant century of surgery". During this period, the development of science has been incomparably greater than anything that has been achieved during the long centuries preceeding it. The heroic feat accomplished in the operating room of the old Heidelberg clinic has initiated a new era in the development of that already independent discipline, known today as urological surgery. This development is rich and multilateral. Ten years have passed since that date when Nitze, the young assistant of the Dresden gynaecological clinic, presented before the most distinguished scientific forum of that age—the Viennese Medical Association—his new instrument, the cystoscope —which revolutionized the whole method of diagnosis. In 1881 Guyon has summed up in his basic work the fundamentals of this already independent discipline. In this tremendous development, everything that we owe to Simon's pioneering work is still as valid as hundred years ago. Many have modified his operatory technique, but his general principles are still basic, being recognized as such. His directives may have been perfected in their details, but as regards their essence they still constitutes the basic pillars of renal surgery. Therefore, it is with recognition that we recall today the known and unknown heroes of that memorable victory, achieved onehundred years ago; we the grateful beneficiaries of Simon's abundant harvest.* összefoglalás A modern vesesebészet megalapításának évfordulóján megemlékeznünk a nagy úttörő, Gustav Simon heidelbergi sebésztanár markáns alakja mellett betegéről is. Ez Kleb Margit, 46 éves offenbachi munkásnő két gyermek anyja volt. Másfél évvel azelőtt, hogy Simonnál jelentkezett, petefészekdaganat miatt műtötték, de * In this connection, it should be pointed out that in Hungary the first nephrectomy was performed by William Tauffer. The observations made on the patients operated by him, for originally ureteric injuries, have enabled Alexander Korányi to perform his separate examinations of the kidney. (The Editor.)
