[2] Semmelweis is mentioning in his Aetiologie that Routh attended the maternity department of the clinic number one at Vienna, when he was there assistent professor, "and he (Routh) was convinced of the truth of my theory on the basis of his experiences in the clinic." (Collected Works, p. 292, Hung.) At the same time he publishes three letters written by Routh to him in Latin; these letters informed him about the events in London: a) January 23, 1849 "I held a lecture before the meeting of English physicians in the last week of November 1848, where I propagated your theory and according to the truth I praised you very much. I may say: my lecture got a warm reception and the best of my colleagues found your arguments very convincing. Especially three of them: Webster, Copeland and Murphy, fameous men and physicians, have spoken fairly of your theory. You may read all about the whole discussion in the Lancet for November 1848. Do you beleivé that the new cases occured since my depart strengthten your theory? Does the endemic puerperal fever appear rarer than earlier?
