GYÖNGYI HAUPTMAN The museum and historic context of a bride's chest iq from the I 7th century ON <N What kind of opportunity do we have for a reconstruction of life history when we are facing an Ci object which found its way into the museum's storage by pure chance and to which no information is attached? Which results might we hope to gam in such a case? This essay attempts to answer these questions with the help of a single artefact, a beride's chest. It was designed in the I 7

th century and has been restaured recently. It has an excellent aesthetic quality but at the same time it is lacking any historic and social context. During the work the inquiry on these levels of historic information and social meanings is shown. On the basis of this step-by-step micro-research we can also gain a look at the 20

th century history of a small settlement. Analysing the available sources, the dynamics of the settlement's local memory and inner process became to be sensed. The history of the chest forces us at the same time to debunk the relationship between the museum and the locality as the subject and object of the inquiry o o
