ÉVA KOVÁCS Mari and her "Romness" - or how to place narratives in ethnic research The author argues through a case study that in social studies sayings and doings are functionally inseparable. The article is based on two theses. According to the first multiculturalist perspectives in late modernity are no less romantic or colonialist than former essentialist approaches. It can be shown, however, that with the help of narrative acts this cultural gap might be closed. The second thesis states that in social relationships sayings guarantees the mental conditions while doings and performances are about cultural deeds. The theses are not only against critiques of narratology but also against narratologist who emphasize exclusivity of narratives.
