ILDIKÓ LEHTINEN Chest and cupboard: A case of identity in a Mari village This essay concerns the ethnic identity of one Mari village as it is articulated in its inhabitants' costumes. They belong to the Eastern Mari, who migrated from the Volga Bend to their contemporary homeland of Bashkortostan in the 18 th century. Since then, they have lived among the Tatar, Bashkir and Udmurt, adopting some elements of dialect and material culture. At the periphery, they have retained their animist religion even during Soviet rule, strengthening their local identity. In the 1970s and 1980s, this particular group of Mari represented an authentic, untainted form of Mari culture for the Mari of the motherland. After 1992, however, the Mari regions outside the Mari republic again became isolated out of economic reasons.
