KOVÁCS = Memory, identity, and history This review essay tries to analyse Assmann's ideas about the relationship between culture and so-C-o cial identity with the help of the concept of cultural memory. Memory as interest in the past partly originates from the demand on creating tradition and identity, and partly is capable of establishing the future through the constructed past.
