Hiroshige - List of Hiroshige's exhibited works
27 Tome River Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.2 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 Konodai was famous for its ruddy maple trees, and Hiroshige depicted maples in his pictures of Konodai in his series entitled "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". He represented an autumnal Konodai in this woodcut, too. Expressing awe, a figure on a height points towards the majestic Fuji. 28 Seven Ri Beach in Sagami Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 36.7 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 The citizens of Edo liked to take the easy walk to Enoshima, the small island in front of Mt. Fuji in this depiction. There are female figures taking a rest in a teahouse, and a traveller on the beach with local children asking him for something - a heart-warming scene. 29 Lake at Hakone Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.1 x 25.1 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 A depiction of Lake Ashi-no-ko at Hakone with its green foliage and rugged shore. Making good use of an upright positioning, the artist condensed the image of the landscape in the picture area, thereby expressing the depth of the scene as well as the sheer height of Mt. Fuji. 30 Waterfall in the Izu Mountains Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.2 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 A stream passing through green mountains reaches a precipice to become a waterfall. The artist uses a few colours, and thus, appearing on a green base, the waterfall and Mt. Fuji give the impression of coldness and clarity. A forester walking the mountain path shows thai the picture depicts far-off parts of the mountains. 31 The Oi River between Suruga and Totomi Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.1 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 The Oi is the biggest river on the Tokaido Road, with a width of nearly 1.3 km; nevertheless, no bridge was to be built across it for reasons of defending Edo. Crossing the river therefore needed human effort. The forefront depicts the transportation of a palanquin on a raft towed by men. Miho Pine Grove in Suruga Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.0 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 The picturesque beauty of the Miho Pine Grove has been famous since ancient times for the green-and-white colour contrast of the sandy beach stretching out into the sea and its pines. According to ancient Japanese legend, fairies dressed in feathers landed here. In the middle-ground, the artist depicts the grove in the shape of a cross. 33 Fuji on the Left on the Tokaido Road Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.0 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 When heading towards Kyoto on the Tokaido Road, Mt. Fuji always appears to the right of the traveller. Near Yoshiwara station, however, there is a section of the road where it is seen on the left because of a curve in the road. This place is thus called "Mt. Fuji on the Left". Hiroshige represented it in his series called "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road", as well. 34 Kuroto Bay in Kazusa Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.1 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 This picture of the area around Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture shows many ships, demonstrating a flourishing sea trade between Edo and Kisarazu. The ships on the left with sails reefed in are the so-called "Godai ri ki-bune". 35 Inume Pass in Kai Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.1 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 A depiction of the area of Inume ("Dog Eye") Pass, a woodblock of which Katsushika Hokusai included in his "Thirty-six Views of Fugaku (Mt. Fuji)". In his diaries, Hiroshige praises the beauty of the Kai mountain range and the purity and splendour of the Katsura river. The miniature representation of the travellers renders the grandiosity of the landscape perceptible. On their way towards Mt. Fuji, the two figures on the height are having a rest. 36 Futami Bay in Ise Province Series: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Oban: 37.1 x 25.2 cm Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo 1859 Futami Bay in Ise Province is famous for a pair of rocks (the Meotoiwa) likened to a man and a woman, depicted in the centre of the picture. A Shinto shrine gate is at the top of the male rock, which is connected by a rope to the smaller, female rock.
