A képen VII. Pius karosszékben ül, s kissé előrehajolva Napóleonhoz szól, aki megrendülve, hátrahőkölve fogadja a pápa hozzá intézett szavait: „Comédien!" (komédiás, képmutató!). 43 A harma50. kép Heliogravure Munkácsy Krisztus Pilátus előtt című képe nyomán / A Heliogravure of Munkácsy's Christ before Pilate, 1898 national acclaim Gustave Doré had achieved with his illustrations for Paradise Lose 16 Macaulay's essay, published in 1825, revived Milton's popularity m England; later on, in writing about Cromwell, Thomas Carlyle presented the poet as the champion of Puritanism and free thinking. 3 ' Portraying Milton as a pamphleteer for the "free republic" of England and as a Cromwell supporter was likely to generate a strong reaction at the Pans International Exposition of 1878, which was the first important debut of the Third Republic after the fall of the Third Empire. 38 On seeing the strong revanchist mood in France, the German Emperor first cancelled his planned visit, and then forbade German artists to participate in it. However, Menzel and Liebermann disregarded the ban and senr their works. As a representative of Austro—Hungarian painters, Munkácsy won one of the gold medals of the International Exposition (grande médaille d'honneur). 39 The painting was bought by Charles Sedelmeyer, with whom Munkácsy went on to sign a tenvear contract in April I878. 40 The contract records Munkácsy's obligations to paint some historical tableaux, although only the scene with Charles I was mentioned specifically. In his book on Munkácsy, Sedelmeyer made the claim that he and Munkácsy jointly explored the possibilities for the "great themes" suitable for large-scale historical paintings: the figures of çrreat men or heroes. The possible candidates included the life of Faust, the death of the Maid of Orléans at the stake, and the execution of Charles I. 41 Since the depiction of Charles Is execution ar Cromwell's orders was likely to remind contemporaries of the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in England, the composition could have had political overtones. The theme of the Maid of Orléans was also loaded with political messages: in the mid19 111 century, Joan of Arc's figure primarily appealed to the royalist and the Bourbon followers in specific. 42 Later on, next to St. Louis's figure, a statue of the Maid of Orléans was added to the Sacré-Coeurs façade as the symbol of "Catholic France" and French revanchism. The claim that the problem of political fault lines within the various nations did, indeed, concern Munkácsy, could be best supported by the pastel sketches he made in 1878 for a planned historical painring about the meeting of Pius VII and Napoleon. Napoleon invited Pius VII to Fontainebleau in 1 813, because he wanted to persuade the Pope to let him, Napoleon, choose the French bishops, rather than Pius. The composition shows Pius VII seated in an armchair, leaning towards Napoleon and speaking to him, while the Emperor is portrayed in a state of shock, taken aback by the Pope's words: "Comédien!" 43 In sharp contrast with the paintings that served to sustain the Third Empire's Napoleon cult, Munkácsy's sketch represents Napoleon in a negative light, as the enemy of the Papacy.
